The FSCC English Department prepares students to think critically, read analytically, and write effectively for the workforce or for successful transfer to universities. As the Kansas Board of Regents systemwide transfer data shows, Kansas community college English students who transfer to universities perform successfully (p. 15). The FSCC English Department offers a rich and varied education in these vital areas of literacy, serving the individual student, the academic community, and society at large.
The freshman English courses (ENG 1013 and 1023) provide all students with a foundation in college writing, reading, and research. These courses emphasize the development of critical thinking skills in logic and argumentation. To further develop understanding of our cultural tradition and to stimulate students’ imaginations, the department offers literature courses ranging from surveys of American and world literature to introductory courses in poetry, fiction, and drama. Courses are designed to provide enrichment to any student and fulfill the general education requirements for all students enrolled in degree and transfer programs. Also available to students who have completed freshman composition are courses in creative writing and technical writing; each emphasize development of different writing skills.
