Hands-on instruction and real-world experiences with Rachel Stauffer
Science isn’t just something to memorize—it’s something to experience. That’s the philosophy Rachel Stauffer brings to every class she teaches at Fort Scott Community College, where she is helping students prepare for careers in healthcare, education, and the biological sciences through engaging, hands-on learning.
Now entering her fifth year at FSCC, Stauffer teaches General Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition, Introduction to Education, and Educating Exceptional Students. Her passion for science and medicine began long before she stepped into the classroom, and today she’s equally passionate about preparing the next generation of educators.
“Science is woven into our lives whether or not we realize it,” Stauffer said. “I also have a passion for creating new teachers who will provide high-quality instruction to younger generations.”
Her educational journey reflects that commitment to learning. Stauffer holds an Associate of Applied Sciences in Veterinary Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, a Master of Science in Biology Education, and a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership.
For Stauffer, teaching goes beyond lectures and textbooks. Many of her biology courses include laboratory experiences where students apply what they’ve learned using real-world examples. She believes connecting course material to everyday life helps students better understand and retain challenging concepts.
“I try to connect science to the world around us,” she said. “For my education majors, I want them to leave with practical ideas and strategies they can actually use in their own classrooms.”
That practical approach is paired with a simple philosophy: every student can succeed.
“I believe every student can succeed with hard work.”
Whether it’s breaking complex topics into manageable pieces, meeting with struggling students outside of class, or finding examples that resonate with individual learning styles, Stauffer is committed to helping every student reach their potential.
One of the most rewarding experiences for her has been watching non-traditional students in Anatomy & Physiology transform over the course of a semester. Many arrive feeling nervous about returning to school and uncertain whether they can handle the rigor of courses required for nursing and other healthcare programs. By the end of the semester, those same students often leave with a new sense of confidence and purpose.
“Watching that transformation of confidence and accomplishment is incredibly inspiring,” she said.
The advice she shares with every student reflects that same encouragement.
“Believe in yourself. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make a difference—your grades, your life, or your world. You’ll never invest in anything better than yourself.”
Stauffer’s journey to Fort Scott Community College happened almost by chance. While teaching dual-credit courses at a high school, she happened to see an opening at FSCC while scrolling through Facebook. Teaching at a community college had always been one of her career goals, making the opportunity an easy decision. It also brought her back to a campus she remembered from her days participating in livestock judging through 4-H and FFA.
Today, she says it’s the people who make FSCC such a special place.
“Our students all have unique stories, and I love getting to know each one of them,” she said. “Our faculty and staff genuinely care about student success, and they continually challenge me to become a better educator.”
That dedication to education extends beyond campus. One of her proudest professional accomplishments was being invited to present at the Missouri Learning Forward Conference, where she shared strategies that helped improve student learning and increase schoolwide academic achievement.
Outside the classroom, Stauffer stays busy helping manage her family’s cow-calf operation and visiting her two children, who are both in college. Although she describes herself as naturally introverted, her enthusiasm for teaching shines through every day in the classroom.
