FSCC Actor’s Showcase: Four one-act plays and dessert.

January 8, 2015

Fort Scott, Kansas – The Fort Scott Community College will be hosting an Actor’s Showcase on December 5th and 6th at 8 p.m. in the Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 and include a dessert and beverage.

The showcase will include four one act plays: “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike;” “Spring Awakening;” “Death of a Salesman;” and the student written “Awkward and Dangerous.” The first three choices will offer a selection of scenes from the longer works. “Awkward and Dangerous” is a true one-act play.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” focuses on the Chekhovian life of middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia. Masha is their movie star sister paying the bills while Spike is her intellectually stunted, but beautiful boyfriend. The New York Times called it a “sunny new play about gloomy people.” It won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013.

“Spring Awakening” is a rock musical adaptation of the classic German play of the same name. The New York Times describes the controversial musical as exploring “the difficulty of finding a place of equilibrium in a world that, round about 13, starts to look strange and terrifying through the distorting prism of puberty.” This musical is definitively PG-13.

Arthur Miller’s classic play, “Death of a Salesman,” will receive the one-act treatment too. The titular salesman, Willy Loman attempts to reconcile his business failings and his relationship with his son Biff. Productions of “Death of a Salesman” have won Tony Awards in 1949, 1984, 1999 and 2012.

The final production is “Awkward and Dangerous” written by FSCC Theatre students Michael Peterson and Alyx Thompson. The play follows potential bank robbers as they agonize over their impending criminal deeds.
