Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

Overview

This 75-hour course covers information related to many commonly prescribed medications. Students learn the classification, side effects and techniques of administration, including preparations and accurate distribution of medications. The safety of clients in long-term care will be discussed and demonstrated by students. Clinical practice sessions will be conducted in a long-term care facility.

The course requires both theory and clinical portions and the participant must be able to meet the competencies to be successful. Participants who complete the course are eligible to sit for the Kansas Certification Examination of Medication Aide. The medication aide certification must be updated every two years. Prerequisites include: Students are required to have a reading proficiency at a minimum level of 8th grade; active Kansas Geriatric Aide Certification, negative TB test, current flu vaccine and COVID vaccine may be required, and be 18 years of age.
