Kansas African American History Trail launches Thursday
The Kansas African American Museum (TKAAM) invites history buffs and other interested trailblazers to journey through history and Kansas when the Museum launches the Kansas African American History Trail & website Thursday, Feb. 21, at 1:30pm; at the Kansas African American Museum. This event is FREE and open to the public at the Kansas African American Museum, 601 N Water.
History trekkers and Kansas travelers will hear about the African American History Trail’s purpose and the eight designated sites across the state. The Trail’s official sites include: The John Brown Museum in Osawatomie, Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum in Leavenworth, Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area in Lawrence, The John and Mary Ritchie House and Brown vs. The Topeka Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka, The Nicodemus National Historic Site in Nicodemus, The Gordon Parks Museum in Fort Scott and The Kansas African American Museum in Wichita.
Wichita travelers can reach most African American History Trail locations within three hours starting locally at The Kansas African American Museum. The farthest destination from Wichita takes three-and-half hours to reach at the Nicodemus National Historic Site.
Travel between the most distant locations—Nicodemus and Fort Scott—could take just under six hours, if explorers drive past five other designated sites along the route. They can be found within 20-minutes of the trail between Nicodemus and Fort Scott.

Horizontes Project, the exhibition created by artist Armando Minjarez featuring North Wichita neighborhood residents runs through May 18. The Kansas African American Museum, 601 N. Water (TKAAMuseum.org) is open Tuesday – Friday, 10am-5pm & Saturdays 12-4pm validated parking in garage across the street with paid admission.
Admission: Adults $5.50; College Students (valid ID) $4.50; Seniors (55+); Youth (5-17) $2.50; Children under 5 FREE.
