FSCC English

In today's information-based society, reading comprehension and writing skills are essential for everyone. The English program offers a rich and varied education in these vital areas of literacy, serving the individual student, the academic community and society at large.

The freshman English courses (ENG 1013 and 1023) provide all students with a foundation in college writing, the reading of nonfiction, fiction, drama, and research. These courses emphasize the development of critical thinking skills in logic and argumentation. In order to further develop understanding of our cultural tradition and to stimulate students' imaginations, the department offers literature courses ranging from surveys of American and world literature to introductory courses in poetry, fiction, and drama. Courses are designed to provide enrichment to any student and fulfill the general education requirements for all students enrolled in degree and transfer programs.

Also available to students who have completed freshman composition are courses in creative writing and technical writing, each emphasizing development of different writing skills.

The objective of the English department is to provide each student with the opportunity to develop his or her own reading, writing, research and critical thinking abilities for successful transfer to universities and for functioning in society and the job market.
